It was quite likely the weakest race Black Caviar will run in this season but that meant little to the champions massive fan base who roared themselves hoarse as the mighty mare recorded her seventeenth consecutive victory in Friday night's Group 2 Australia Stakes at Moonee Valley.
Tracking the early speed set by Zedi Knight, Black Caviar (Bel Esprit x Helsinge by Desert Sun) cruised to the lead at the point of the turn when Luke Nolen released the brakes. With a few flicks of the rein, the 5yo daughter of Bel Esprit cleared away to defeat Zedi Knight (Zeditave) by four and a quarter lengths with the winners stablemate Doubtful Jack (Not A Single Doubt) another for and a half lengths back in third. The time for the race was a slick 1.09.44

"It's great to see her back in great shape," Moody said.
"Her attitude was good, her action was terrific so hopefully it is the start of a wonderful six months.
"They race 1.9-something. It was easy to say she was unextended but how much faster do they go. It was wonderful to see her back in great shape."
Moody said Black Caviar would next tackle the C F Orr and Futurity Stakes, both over 1400 metres at Caulfield next month.
He will then consult with the owners on a overseas campaign which may well take in Dubai as well as Royal Ascot.
In keeping her record at a perfect 17 for 17, Black Caviar takes her overall earnings to over $4.5 million.
This was her seventh group 2 success, which matches her seven Group 1 wins and her 16th stakes triumph.
Bred by Rick Jamieson's Gilgai Stud, Black Caviar was consigned by Swettenham Stud to the 2008 Inglis Premier Yearling sale where she was knocked down to Moody for $210,000. She is the first foal of the unraced Desert Sun mare Helsinge, a half-sister to Group 1 winner Magnus and Group 2 winner Wilander.
Helsinge has an unraced 2yo colt by Casino Prince and a yearling filly foal by Redoute's Choice and a colt foal by the same stallion. She was bred back to Bel Esprit last year, one of 125 mares covered by the Eliza park resident whose fee was advertised at $27,500.
